According to the International Research Rice Institute (IRRI), engineering C3 rice to perform C4 photosynthesis will lead to a second Green Revolution to boost yields by 50%. Since C4 photosynthesis is a very complex trait and very little is known about how the pathway is regulated, it largely limits the progress in genetic engineering of C4 photosynthesis into C3 plants. Evolutionary engineering do not require a priori genetic knowledge, a powerful approach for improving fitness by taking advantage of the principle of natural evolution. We develop a strategy to solve this problem by developing a new paradigm for plant breeding.We combine the bioengineering of well-understood traits with subsequent evolutionary engineering,i.e.mutagenesis and artificial selection. Mutagenized transgenic plants are then screened for improved photosynthesis, and are expected to respond to imposed artificial selection pressures by evolving towards C4  anatomy and biochemistry.
