Residents of Akosombo Combine community of the Asuogyaman constituency in the Eastern Region have registered their grievances by demonstrating through the principal streets of Akosombo over what they call the outrageous heights in utility tariff.
The demonstration which saw the Member of Parliament for the area Hon. Thormas Ampem Nyarko participating in was something which residents say they least expected from the Volta River Authority and government.
Speaking on the Global FM news at 12 noon today 16th May, Mr. Yaw Gavin said their old meters were replaced with a new one which they suspect to be the cause for the high electricity tariffs.
“we use to pay about Gh₵ 100.00 a month when the old meter was there, since this new meter were fixed, our electricity bills have rocket into astronomical heights close to Gh₵ 2000.00 which we can no longer afford to pay” he added.
What at all do we use in our homes aside one fridge and light bulbs to warrant payment of such high bills? The taxi driver quizzed. They have given government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) a one week ultimatum to address their concerns or face more series of demonstrations until their wish is granted.
A petition has been presented to the Volta River Authority and government.
The VRA has given the aggrieved residents assurance of solving the problems associated with the meters with the one week time frame.
