Minister for Agric blows Ghc16 million on FAKE ArmyWorm Pesticides through sole sourcing

Brazil based Ghana’s minister for Agriculture Hon Owusu Afriyie Akoto may have to come back home to answer some serious questions regarding the ravaging army worms that is destroying farms across the country.

Following our publication last week of the use of SoKlin washing powder by farmers as an alternative to treating the plague, we proceeded to ask from some farmers in the Upper East Region as to why they have resorted to the use of the washing powder instead of the pesticide that was distributed by the Agric ministry, our query revealed a serious scandal yet to hit the government.

According to one farmer at Bongo who has 20acres of maize farm, the chemicals provided them was fake and could not kill the pesticide. Our Team suggested to him that, the army worms could possibly have develop a resistance to the chemicals but in an angry rebuttal he retorted, ‘’My son, it is not so, I have been farming for 27 years now and when they brought this chemicals I knew something was wrong with it but the agric extension officers told me I should take it or leave it so I also had no option than to take it’’ he said.  

Our investigation also revealed that the company that supplied the chemicals said to be worth Ghc16 million did not have the competence to supply the said chemicals and worrying too was the fact that the procurement was sole sourced with the explanation from the minister that it was an emergency situation and so he was going to award the contract to a company he already knew.

This morning on an Accra based FM station, Joy FM, some angry farmers called into the station and pleaded with President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency and deal with the situation else politics will plunge the country into serious food shortage...
