Reports gathered from the Brong Ahafo regional tour of the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo indicates that the president is vigorously embarking on an underground campaign against the current acting chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Freddy Blay.
From information gathered, the president is deeply uncomfortable with Mr. Freddy Blay leading the NPP as its substantive chairman.
"It is sufficient keeping him as a First Vice Chairman and later an acting chairman after we managed to remove Afoko. But to make him a substantive chairman? We cannot make that mistake", President Akufo-Addo says. "Blay is not a deep-rooted member of the NPP. We simply considered him for the advantage he brought us at the time", he added.
"I want you all here to consider Alhaji Short. He represents the true reflection of the party. He is a core member of the party and had been so since this party was formed. Let's reward loyalty and longevity. Blay is making impact. He is making inroads, that is why I am here. To guide you to make the right choice for the NPP to stay in power longer", president Akufo-Addo admonishes party supporters drawn from Techiman, Nkoranza and its environs in a closed door meeting.
Mr. Freddy Blay is seeking the mandate of members of the New Patriotic Party as its Chairman after acting in that capacity for the past three years. Mr. Blay, the former First Deputy Speaker, former Member of Parliament for Elembele in the Western Region and a current Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) is on a nation wide campaign to ensure he becomes successful at his bid.
Sources have confirmed that the president had tried on many occasions to talk down Mr. Blay, but he remained adamant. According to him, he is confident the party would elect him based on his good words as Deputy Chairman of the NPP while in opposition.
It is unclear efforts in place to talk down Mr. Stephen Ntim, another strong contender in the contest. We are monitoring development in the region in relation to the upcoming national delegates conference of the NPP, and shall keep you updated.
